What You Should Know about Fixed and Plunge Routers

Basically, wood routers are available in two base types, namely, fixed base and plunge base. Before you purchase a wood router, you have to determine the type that will be suitable for you. Before you will be able to decide on which one is the best option for you, it is important that you know the difference between the two. Here are things to know about them.

We may read at special websites about best wood routers that┬ámajor difference between fixed base and plunge routers is the position of the router but which is not constant in the former but constant in the latter. This means that if you are working with a fixed base router and it is set at a 1/4 inch cut depth, the bit remain protruded beyond the base 1/4inch until the depth is changed by the user. But with a plunge base, you have to preset the cut depth. The bit should be lowered into the cut with the base flat of the router on the workpiece’s surface. Plunge routers make up and down movement on the base. The arms on either side of the base are spring-loaded. In the fixed base routers, the router is locked in the base at a fixed position with the cutting bit not able to make any movement.

Most woodworkers today have fixed based routers. They are the standard type and are more widely available. They are also more affordable than plunge base routers. Fixed base routers are also not difficult to use or learn as it is the case with some models of plunge base routers. They are more portable. This is why with them, the problem of being top heavy does no longer exist. Some models are versatile as they can be used to carry out plunge type work. Such models provide great bottom adjustments and can be mounted on a table. But if you want to use them for plunge work, you have to angle in the bit which can be dangerous in some cases. It is also difficult to do.

Thus, the plunge base router even though it is difficult to learn how to use them is the best option for any person working by hand. It is also a veritable option for do-it-yourself hobbyist or for work around the home. This is because it provides users with more options than the fixed base. Besides, it can be locked so that it can be used as a fixed base router. The fixed-based routers on the other hands are good options for works that need superior-precise cuts.
